Usually reserved for November’s Thanksgiving issue, a timelier moment does not exist for thanking our brave firefighters for keeping our forests, our homes, and ourselves safe this season. With over four million acres burned by California’s wildfires this year, our little community has been spared by Providence and by the brave men and women of the North San Juan Volunteer Fire Department, CAL FIRE and USFS. On duty twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, these stalwart individuals put their lives on the line for us. First responders not only fight fires. They are the first to arrive at accident scenes, perform daring river rescues, and deliver emergency medical care whenever and wherever needed. Although there are no words that adequately express the gratitude that should be showered upon these exceptional human beings, a simple “Thank You” is greatly appreciated. Donations to the North San Juan Fire Auxiliary, and North San Juan Fire Protection District are also welcome, as is spare change dropped into the firefighter’s helmet at Mother Truckers Market.
