“BE THE CHANGE THAT YOU WISH TO SEE IN THE WORLD.”

                                                                                        Mahatma Ghandi

Ever since November’s election, many of our patrons have been gloomily crossing our threshold, expressing a gamut of emotions ranging from disappointment and dismay to utter despair. They share their fears of what the future may hold for them, their country, and the world. Many people are truly grieving. They feel powerless and afraid.

Addressing pervasive sadness and disempowerment may seem inappropriate as we approach the midst of a holiday season described as merry and bright. However, there are so many for whom hopelessness has become a chronic condition that it cannot be ignored. Many are suffering because of loss, not only at the polls, but at home. The loss of a loved one, a livelihood, a home, a country, a culture, a species, an ecosystem, is understandably devastating. We are human beings and we have feelings. The more we care, the more it hurts.

It is not only important, but essential, that we aid and support one another. Ours is a social species. Our happiness and survival depend upon our ability to care. The state of the world may be discouraging at times, but it is our world and we are not powerless. If you want the world to be a kinder, more tolerant place, practice kindness and tolerance. Voting is not enough! It is unwise to rely upon elected officials to be wholly responsible for our happiness and wellbeing. We, both individually and collectively, bear that responsibility.

As we prepare to celebrate the winter solstice, Christmas, and/or Hanukkah we are acknowledging the miraculous, life affirming power of light. Humans need light, and plenty of it, to thrive. Even a little light has the power to dispel a lot of darkness.

Our mid-winter wish for you is that you shine! May you inhabit a world that is brilliantly lit by your Kindness, Generosity, Happiness, and Hope.

San Juan Ridge Family Resource Center gratefully acknowledges the generosity and support of our community throughout the year.  We depend upon that support to fund many of our services and activities, as well as the ability to keep our doors open and the lights on.
