When some of our young visitors were asked about celebrating the winter holidays, their answers were unexpected.  Rather than yearning for piles of presents or mouthfuls of sugary treats, they most valued time spent with their families. Having a big family meal, decorating a Christmas tree, or lighting a menorah were among their happiest memories. Although they acknowledged the practice of exchanging presents, the gift of togetherness was their most valued holiday tradition. When asked to share a holiday desire, most admitted that they hadn’t really given the matter much thought and that it was difficult for them to come up with any ideas for themselves. However, when asked if there were something they would like to give to others, each one answered immediately and decisively. Wishes for clean oceans, healthy forests, kindness, happiness, and housing for all were expressed. They were inspiring in their care and concern for others and for the world we inhabit.

My wish is that these young people do not lose their idealism, that they continue to dream and strive to make the world a better place, and that they remain unselfish and continue to treasure precious moments spent with those they love. Whether Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, or Solstice, are celebrated, mid-winter is a perfect time to practice idealism, to dream and strive to make the world a better place, and to treasure time with loved ones. We are grateful to our young visitors and to all who have supported and inspired us throughout the year. Happy Holidays!
