Parents and community members have been voicing their concerns regarding the spread of coronavirus. The following letter was issued by Scott Lay, Nevada County Superintendent of Schools, on January 30, and contains general advice on containing the spread of respiratory infections, as well as a site where one can find more information about the coronavirus and appropriate safety precautions.

The Center for Disease Control’s site has the most up to date information on the virus:

“As you may know, there have been reports of a new virus spreading in China called novel coronavirus. The virus has been found in a few people who arrived in the United States after having been in China.  We want to assure you that we are monitoring the situation and having communication with the local health department.  Health officials believe the risk to the general community is low at this time as confirmed cases in the US have been isolated and their close contacts are being monitored.

We would like to use this as an opportunity to remind you about some best practices to avoid spreading respiratory infections in general:

--If your student is sick or has fever, cough, or sneezing, please keep them home from school to avoid spreading illness.

--Remind your student that hands should be washed often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

--When coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth and nose.  Dispose of tissue immediately and wash hands.

--Avoid contact with anyone exhibiting cold-like symptoms.

Additionally, please be aware the CDC is recommending against any travel to China that is nonessential.”
