Ruth passed away gently on May 9th, 2016 in her home - in her room, with her caregiver, great grandson; Chad Varner and great great grandson; Marshall Varner, by her side. An original “Rosie the Riveter” and a Montana dude ranch chef, Ruth Tilton moved to North San Juan from the Los Angeles area in 1971. She was widowed twice; first by Albion Hart, then by Floyd C Tilton 02/06/98. Ruth traveled extensively to Italy, Japan, to other parts known and collected spoons and pill boxes from all over the world.

She had two children, Rex and Reina, of whom Ruth is survived by Reina. She was an avid gardener and volunteer. She was active in the North San Juan Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary – being in charge of bake sales and fundraisers, North San Juan Community Center Food Bank Distribution – being the “bag” lady for over 40 years, The North Gold Senior Mountaineers - helping with the fundraisers, Bingo Night and was one of the founders, Native Daughters of the Golden West – holding numerous positions in this California historical preservation society, United Methodist Church of North San Juan – being a supporter on the board & setting up picnics and was the Matriarch of The North San Juan Community Church – where her great grandson and her great great grandson are ministers. She was employed by the North Columbia Schoolhouse and North San Juan Old Schoolhouse as a teacher for many years before their closure.

Her devotion to the small community of North San Juan was exhibited by her having what she called, “Tilton's Taxi” in her spare time – to take folks to get groceries or run errands. She is also survived by her grandchildren; Christopher Hart, Charles Hart, Kevin Hart and David Hart, Steve Griffith, Susan Findlay, and Denise Smith. She is survived by her great grandchildren; James Hart, Jared Hart, Jessica Hart, Chad Varner, LeeAnn Varner, and Carolyn Burns. She is survived by her great great grandchildren; Marshall Varner, Jayden Hymes, Julieann Varner, Glen Truitt, and Lilly Burns. Donations of money or perishable food in Ruth Tilton's name may be made to the North San Juan Community Church to begin a new outreach program, “Ruthie's Pantry”.
