Congratulations, Graduates!

Graduation is not to be taken lightly. It is a true rite of passage, especially on the San Juan Ridge. When 8th grade students leave their cozy country school to attend a larger high school in town, they are thrust into a new world that is rife with challenges and opportunities. For some the experience is stimulating. For others, it is daunting. For one and all, it is a serious step into the future.

For nine years students have labored to reach this point. Although the most natural thing in the world, growing up is a struggle. Every young person who receives a diploma has earned it. They have proved themselves socially, as well as academically. They have evolved from children into young adults. We acknowledge their achievements, applaud their courage, and wish them well as they embark upon the next step in the great adventure of Life!

First Annual Yuba Village Building Convergence

Building community resiliency through Placemaking, workshops, dancing, music and Feasts, this is the First Annual Yuba Village Building Convergence, June 20-25th.

The process of reclaiming public space to serve community needs, by the community, is known as Placemaking and this is what Yuba Village is doing. We are a group of activated community members hosting a week long festival offering various Placemaking sites to plug in and get your hands dirty to improve public space for the community. Such sites include the NSJ Community Center (formerly know as the Senior Center) where we have been creating a Pollinator Garden and plan to repair the picnic tables, Full Circle Garden behind the county jail, building a cob bench at Burton Homestead, and Commercial street in downtown Nevada City where we will be transforming a block of the street into a piazza, or town square, for the weekend.

We also have an all star line up for workshops on community resiliency, herbalism, natural building and more from Starhawk, Mark Lakeman, Penny Livingston, Rowen White, Don Tipping, Dr. Florie Wild, Sequoia and Matt Berry, to name a few. Ayla Nereo, Mariee Sioux, Love and Light, Samba Drop and more will be offering amazing beats in the evening times to get our groove on.

Check out to inquire about tickets, the schedule and how to volunteer. To get in on what's happening at the NSJ Community Center contact Avani at 480.993.6487.

The Little Library That Could

On the morning of May 23rd Nevada County’s Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to approve the five year strategic plan presented by Nevada County Librarian Laura Peppani. For months the Nevada County Library system was gathering input from staff and community on how best to allocate sales tax revenues generated as a result of the passage of Measure A by Nevada County voters. Our own San Juan Ridge Community Library will be the recipient of funding that will help “eliminate barriers” and support it as a “…center of enrichment in a strong, powerful rural community.” Many thanks to Roo Cantada and SJRCL’s stalwart board members and volunteers for breathing life into a library that has grown into an institution that will continue as a community hub for years to come.

The North San Juan Community Center has been so lucky to have Chef Rusty Ware take the reins in our kitchen for Tuesday lunches that happen from 12:00 to 1:00 each week!  Rusty has 30 years of experience in various locations including having his own restaurant with his brother in Mexico, his own restaurant in Las Vegas, working also in San Diego & Santa Barbara.  He’s also been featured in various local venues over the years, Peterson’s Corner, Toki’s & The Twin Ridges School District.  This meal is quite a deal with “all you can eat” soup & salad bar, entree, serve your self beverages of your choice & dessert.  For the price it’s the best deal on the Ridge & by far the best salad bar!!!!!!  To encourage folks to take advantage of, share and help support this valuable community resource we’re offering $1 off of all price categories for the month of June when accompanied by a copy of this article.  Limit is one per person.  Many, many thanks to all the volunteers that make this possible!!!!!!!
