SOMETHING to CELEBRATE: Public Transportation Returns to the Ridge!

On May 14, the Nevada County Transportation Commission voted unanimously to reinstate service from the San Juan Ridge to the Nevada City/Grass Valley area. Beginning on Monday, July 8, Lucky Route #7 will operate three round trips a day, five days a week (Monday-Friday). Grant funding will enable the county to purchase a new hybrid transit van to service our route. Although the Ridge was once included in Nevada County’s public transportation plan, Lucky #7 is considered a new route, therefore receiving the benefits of being a pilot program. This means that operations will not depend upon the number of riders or bus fares for the first two years, during which all operating costs will be absorbed by the county. Beginning in July, 2021, transit fares collected by riders will need to amount to only 10% of operating costs, which is still a pretty good deal. We have two years to build a ridership so that we will be able to keep this hard-won service.
Nevada County Transit Manager Robin Van Valkenburgh credited community support as the determining factor for reinstatement of public transportation services to, from, and around the San Juan Ridge. “Interactions with the San Juan Ridge Action Community Team, initial petition signatures, and survey responses indicated grass roots support for service to come back. I want to thank Roo, Rhea, and Coral for pushing for the service to be reestablished. They did a ton of work and were as enthused about transit as could be. They were impressive!” We at the San Juan Ridge Family Resource Center echo these sentiments and extend our gratitude to all who signed petitions, completed surveys, attended meetings, wrote letters, made public statements, and remained steadfast over a long, tedious crusade for access to public transportation for our community. Now there’s only one more vitally important thing to do:

RIDE THE BUS!
