Joni Mitchell nailed it in her song, Big Yellow Taxi:

“Don’t it always seem to go

That you don’t know what you’ve got

Til it’s gone…”

Life is a series of fleeting moments filled with little things we take for granted: Freedom. Peace. Love. Support. Towering trees. Rushing Rivers. Singing Birds. Laughing Children. Sunshine. Rain. A Hot Shower. A Comfortable bed. True friends. Meaningful Work. Good health. These are only a few of the myriad of things that easily go unnoticed when they’re here and are sorely missed when they’re gone.

As we prepare for Thanksgiving, rather than merely counting our blessings, we should savor and appreciate them. Although making every moment count is one of life’s greatest challenges, mastering the ability to live fully in each moment is well worth the effort. What’s passed is history. What’s yet to come is mystery. All we have is Now. That’s a lot to be thankful for!
