The Nevada County Library began it’s life-changing literacy service in 1998 with grant funding from the California Library Literacy Service (CLLS), a part of the California State Library. The program’s mission is to help English speaking adults build their reading, writing and math skills, plus GED preparation, through the FREE, CONFIDENTIAL ONE-ON-ONE efforts of volunteer tutors. All instructional materials are provided at no charge.

Over 36 million adults nationwide struggle with everyday basic life tasks! The Nevada County Library knows there are many people in this county who would benefit by improving their English skills, so the Library has made it especially easy and comfortable to get help!

Read Up is a county-wide program of the Nevada County Library working out of the Madelyn Helling Library in Nevada City and the Branch Library in Truckee. Read Up participants will improve all areas of their lives, by building skills to:

· Read and Write Better!

· Perform Basic Math!

· Understand School, Business and Community Activities!

· Help Children with Their Homework!

· Understand Nutritional and Medical Information!

· Fill our Job Applications and other Important Papers!

· Read Maps & Schedules!

· Much, much more!
