“How do I love thee, let me count the ways,” the first few words of Victorian poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s sonnet, are simple yet inspirational, urging one to ponder the breadth and depth of their own love. As St. Valentine’s Day approaches, one’s mind turns to thoughts and expressions of love.
Just as Thanksgiving is about more than football and turkey, St Valentine’s Day is about more than flowers and candy. Love’s feast day is for everyone. It’s a good time not just to say, “I love you,” but to demonstrate it. We live in a busy, often hectic time. Our lives are comprised of moments. Perhaps the most precious gift we can bestow is time. Taking time to listen, to laugh, to offer a kind word or a helping hand, to share a meal, to pat the dog is a much appreciated gift. Giving one’s time is giving one’s life. Can there be any greater gift to those we love?
